On site BackUps
Traditionally, backups are conducted directly from the server or workstation you wish to back up, to one of the following locations:-

1. Via the local network to a secure secondary data storage system or backup tape library on the same site (preferably in a different building).
2. Removeable storage media device attached directly to, or installed inside, the individual server or workstation (e.g. tape, cartridge, CD, DVD etc).

Best Practice is to store the removeable media in a secure location away from the main site, in a different and secure building on the same site, or at the very least in a fire-proof safe.

It is also always worth checking with your insurance company, as it is sometimes a requirement of your policy as to where you store the backup.

Off-site BackUps

Online backup services use software that automates the uploading of selected files to a remote computer, and the ability to restore files, using your Internet connection. There are various services available offering storage capacities of a few gigabytes to several terabytes (1TB = 1000GB).

The cost of this type of service can start at around £5 per GB, but the more storage space you need the lower the price per GB can be. Fees usually include provision of software to enable your computers to connect to the service in order for backup and restore processes to take place and to configure and manage your back up routines.

There are pros and cons to all the available options. We can guide you through the minefield to find the right solution for your business.
